<image:title>Blog - If My Dog Was Nervous of New People and Boarding Was Coming Up, Here’s Where I’d Start - If I had a dog who was nervous around new people and boarding was coming up, I’d start by getting very honest about their baseline.</image:title>
<image:caption>Are they mildly unsure but able to settle? Or are they escalating into growling, snapping, or intense avoidance? Those are very different starting points. If there’s aggression or strong defensive behavior involved, I wouldn’t wing it. I’d connect with a trainer and prep for this one-on-one. Boarding is not the place to “see how it goes.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - If My Dog Was Nervous of New People and Boarding Was Coming Up, Here’s Where I’d Start - Next, I’d shift my focus from friendliness to neutrality.</image:title>
<image:caption>I don’t need my dog to love the staff. I need them to coexist calmly. That means practicing being around new people without pressure to interact. And just as importantly, I’d give the humans guidance. No looming. No high-pitched baby talk. No forced petting. Calm, neutral, predictable energy makes nervous dogs feel safer.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - If My Dog Was Nervous of New People and Boarding Was Coming Up, Here’s Where I’d Start - Separation skills are equally important</image:title>
<image:caption>If my dog struggles when I leave the room at home, boarding is going to feel huge. I’d work on building comfort with alone time before expecting them to handle a full stay away from me. “You leave, you come back” needs to feel predictable long before a boarding stay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - If My Dog Was Nervous of New People and Boarding Was Coming Up, Here’s Where I’d Start - One more practical thing I would absolutely prioritize? Slip lead pressure.</image:title>
<image:caption>For pass-offs especially, I prefer a slip lead. It’s clean, secure, and doesn’t allow a nervous dog to back out of a collar if they get intense. Practicing that pressure ahead of time makes transitions safer for everyone involved.</image:caption>

But what I really needed wasn’t more tips or tools. I needed a new way to lead. Whether your dog is nervous, reactive, pushy, or just living their best chaotic puppy life — it’s not about “fixing” them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Leash reactivity: The first few days - WHERE DO WE START?</image:title>
<image:caption>It is rare for us to get in a dog who has beautiful leash manners and a clear understanding of how to respond to pressure. Leo was a massive puller and when I tell you he knew how pressure worked, I mean it. But, it wasn’t in a way his owners would like him to understand it. I.e. he wants to pull mom to sniff something, he is dragging her to do so and the second he gets to where we wants, pressure is released. Many owners do not realize that it is reinforcing the pulling. What does this have to do with leash reactivity? Well, I’ll tell ya! In the moments that he is seeing other dogs on the walk, his owners know that they can’t allow him to pull up to other dogs so his normal bulldozing behavior isn’t working for him so he is building up frustration in every attempt to make his way towards the other dog. When the normal pulling and lunging doesn’t work, the barking, screeching and theatrics kick in. With him having five years of practicing this, his response to other dogs happens quicker and more intensely, it wasn’t an over-night response. It’s practiced and perfected at this point. So what do we do? With Leo, I immediately worked on his pulling. He needs to know how to walk on a leash with a human before ever getting around other dogs. Check out this video for eliminating pulling!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Leash reactivity: The first few days - Every moment counts</image:title>
<image:caption>Every moment a dog is here they are learning and getting clarity on what is expected, what won’t be allowed and what we like they are offering us. Typically owners want the reactivity to stop, right? But, they are looking for a solution to address just that. It often doesn’t work that way. For the first handful of days, when we take the dogs out of their kennels they are on some kind of leash and their e-collar. Every interaction in intentional so we can give clear direction. Trying to rush out of the kennel to run to the back door? Nope, we slow them down and they have a leash on so they can’t do that. They get off place to try to go up to another dog? Nope, they are on leash and on a tie back so we can immediately guide them back on. Thinking it’s okay to pull up to other dogs on the walk? Nope, we revert back to our follow and heel practice and correct for that choice and give direction to what we do want. Does that sound like micromanaging? Probably! Initially it is because most dogs have spent so long fueling their impulses in an unbalanced way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Leash reactivity: The first few days - Passive interactions</image:title>
<image:caption>All dogs are immediately spending a lot of their time around other dogs, but that does not mean direct interactions. They kennel next to each other, walk side by side, place in the same room, and have exposure to dogs on outings. They are getting so many great experiences around other dogs, but the focus isn’t about the dogs playing or sniffing or interacting. That goal is to build up their relationship with me so I can lay the foundation for their owners to continue this lifestyle change back home.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Confidence building made simple! - GET OUT and Hang</image:title>
<image:caption>Never discredit the value of going somewhere in public with your dog and chilling. Teaching your dog to relax on command (we use “down” most often) while watching the world go on around them is priceless. Here is the caveat…it is your responsibility to advocate for their space and be able to interrupt any unwanted behaviors from them (excessive barking, breaking commands, fleeing). I.e., Your dog is nervous about new people: someone sees your cute dog and starts approaching. Remain calm, extend your leg out with clear body language that space is needed, and verbalize, “My dog needs space, please!” If they continue to move forward and disregard what you said, stand up, put your hand out towards them, and repeat, “We need space; do not approach.” Remember, how people respond to you advocating for your dog’s space is not your responsibility. Pick a spot to go that will set you and your dog up for success. Challenges are great, but pick somewhere attainable for you both. If your dog is reactive, a super busy outdoor cafe on a weekend in the summer probably isn’t where you should start. Instead, grab a coffee and head to a park where you and your dog can take things in from a distance. That is a great start!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Confidence building made simple! - up up!</image:title>
<image:caption>“The world is your oyster!” There are so many opportunities in your everyday life and environment to give your dog a little confidence boost, even if initially they feel like they can’t do it. We use the term “up up” to encourage dogs to hop on things like benches, big rocks, tree stumps, half walls, carts, etc. Your dog's confidence will skyrocket when they conquer hopping up on that "scary" thing. What once was nerve-wracking becomes fun! Tip: Your dog will most likely initially try to back away from the object, flee, or even buck on the leash. We handle this by staying super neutral, providing consistent leash guidance, tapping on the thing we want them to jump up on, and cheering them on at any attempt to move onto or towards the targeted spot.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Confidence building made simple! - starts at home</image:title>
<image:caption>Does your dog run away when you get out the vacuum? Get flighty when you open a new garbage bag? Try to bolt when rolling the garbage can back down the driveway? Go crazy when they hear someone knock on the door? I recommend you show them what you WANT them to do in those situations. They are currently defaulting to a pattern and state of mind they have already practiced. They need to be taught a new one and given direction. Having something else to focus on will help their nervous system regulate, which will lead them to process the fact that their fear or response might, in fact, be irrational. Teach the “place” command! This is one of the best household management tools you can implement for your dog and your family. Also, teach leash manners and the concept of “heel.” Being able to give clear direction to your dog while also holding them accountable is key! This will directly enhance your dog’s overall confidence because you are eliminating unnecessary stressors!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Having worked with hundreds of dogs, I can confidently say that committing to the basics is crucial. If you want to strengthen your bond with your dog and make your time together more enjoyable, there is no substitute for the fundamental basics. Even if your dog is generally well-behaved, using the leash to reinforce commands, maintain control, and provide clarity is important. So, if your dog’s training is getting “sloppy,” it's time to step up and commit to the basics & that includes using that leash! Link to our favorite versatile leash!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The 2024 5-day Kickstart - Impulse Control</image:title>
<image:caption>It's always a good idea to practice real-life situations with your dog before they even happen. This can help prepare both you and your dog for the unexpected, while also giving you a chance to have some fun together. One great way to do this is through impulse control activities. These can help your dog learn to resist temptation and stay calm in a variety of situations. By practicing these activities regularly, you'll be better equipped to handle anything that might come your way. So, whether you're working on loose leash walking, ignoring distractions, or just practicing basic obedience commands, remember that the more you practice, the more prepared you and your dog will be for the real world.</image:caption>

Recall training is a vital tool that ensures your dog's safety in potentially hazardous situations and helps to forge a deeper, more meaningful bond between you and your best bud. However, it's imperative to note that recall training is not a one-and-done process, but rather a relationship-based journey that requires patience, dedication, and consistency to achieve reliability. <image:caption>I've found that incorporating dogs into my daily lifestyle has been incredibly rewarding for both of us. Dogs crave routine and guidance, so providing them with structure and clarity can really help them thrive. Make sure to establish clear boundaries and expectations for your dog, so they know what's expected of them. Having a “default day” also helps you realistically fulfill your dog, while also taking care of yourself!</image:caption>
